What’s in Season This September?
September means the end of summer and the official start of fall: Cozy socks, warm oatmeal with cinnamon and raisins, more soup and Pumpkin everything coming your way!
Although in LA we’re in the middle of a heat wave and we won’t pull out sweaters and jumpers yet (I probably will soon), the temptation to gear up for fall is high. Here’s a highlight of what’s in season for September:
Apples:
Apples are in season during most of the summer and fall, but now is when they really start to taste the best!Apples are a great source of fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and vitamin K.
Grapes:
A perfect snack especially if you have a sweet tooth, Grapes are packed with nutrients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin K, B1, B2 and B6, Potassium to name a few. They’re high in antioxidants and may help lowering your blood pressure (Source: health line)
Figs:
Figs have long been used as a home remedy or an alternative treatment for digestive problems like constipation. They may improve blood pressure and blood fat levels, which can help improve your vascular health and decrease your risk of heart disease.Figs may also have some beneficial effects on the skin, especially in people with dry or itchy skin as a result of allergies.
Eggplants:
One approach to making sure you’re getting a variety of nutrients from your vegetables is to “eat the rainbow”.Adding eggplants to your food is a great way to get purple color nutrition in your diet. They’re high in fiber, protein, and manganese (an essential trace element that is naturally present in many foods and available as a dietary supplement), low in calories, and a good source of antioxidants.
Green Beans:
Green beans contain many essential vitamins and minerals, including:
Vitamin A, C, K , Folate, Calcium and iron to name a few. They’re full of fiber, which is an important nutrient for many reasons. Soluble fiber, in particular, may help to improve the health of your heart by lowering your LDL Cholesterol (bad cholesterol) levels.
So next time you’re going for a grocery run or a visit to the farmers market, make sure to pick up some of these delicious, nutritious and in season fruits and vegetables.
