3 Reasons Why You Don’t Feel Hungry!
I love eating, from shopping to cooking and yes eating, I truly look forward to it everyday!
But, do you sometimes find yourself asking “Why am I not hungry?!”
It can be frustrating and confusing, especially if it goes on like this for a while…
So I’m going to share with you the 3 most common reasons why you may not feel hungry for an extended period of time.
1- Loss of hunger cues:
One of the most common reasons you don’t feel hungry is because you’ve lost your hunger cues. Hunger cues are what your body uses to regulate its energy intake naturally. Basically they tell you “ I need some food” or “I got what I need, I'm good”.
But, if you’ve been jumping from one diet to another or been following really strict food rules, chances are you’ve lost your hunger cues.
Your body has learned that no matter how often it asks for food you’re not listening so it simply stops asking.
This loss of hunger cues is one of the main reasons why you feel so lost when you come out of a diet or restrictions. You have no idea how to eat anymore without a set of rules and what typically happens is a swing between hangry to overstuffed, and the total loss of the sense of the comfortable middle ground.
2- Emotions:
Experiencing strong emotions is often one of the main reasons why you lose your appetite.
When you feel stressed, anxious, nervous or sad, these emotions can distract your hunger.
Chances are you even forget what day or time it is, you skip lunch without realizing and yet still no feeling hungry.
Anytime anyone in our membership community or a 1:1 client says they’ve lost their hunger cues and don’t have much appetite, I always ask them what else is going on in your life.
So if that’s you, I have one suggestion for you: Take care of those emotions!
That means time for you, self-care (whatever that looks like for you), journaling, talking to a friend and…
Also make sure to check in with yourself on the hunger scale and if you know you haven’t eaten for a good while, then choose to nourish yourself with a little bit of something that you really like.
3- Your body has enough energy:
Last but not least, you may simply not be hungry because your body has enough energy!
For example, I’m recovering from an injury right now so I’m not moving, running or working out as much as I typically do and I feel less hungry than I usually feel (believe me when I say I’m always hungry :))
Nevertheless it’s always a good idea to double check your hunger scale, because if you let yourself go too long without eating, you'll very likely swing between hangry to over-eating in no time!
And remember you don’t always need to force yourself to eat a big meal just because it’s food time. The more you practice getting in-tune with your body and listening to the cues it’s giving you, the easier it gets.
Drop me a note and let me know your thoughts on this topic and if you’ve ever experienced any of the above reasons.
Is there a food or a snack that you love to eat when not hungry but know your body needs nourishment?
For me it’s usually a Banana :)
Happy eating!
