Here’s What Your Sugar Cravings Are Telling You
When it comes to sugar cravings, here’s the biggest question of all time:
Why can’t I quit something that’s so clearly bad for my health, my brain, and my body?
But I think before even answering this question it’s really important to understand what your sugar craving is actually all about.
Your body is smart. It knows what it needs. A sugar craving is your body's way of telling you “I'm not getting what I need, stop feeding me junk and FEED ME real food!”
Your sugar craving may also be telling you, you have an imbalance in your life like too much stress, fatigue, and hormone imbalances.
Here are 4 of the messages your sugar craving is delivering:
1- You’re exhausted:
When you’re extremely tired, sugar provides you with an energy boost because it’s metabolized fast. And as much as this is true, it’s also a sweet easy way to get really dependent on that sugar kick!
One of the best ways to shift that, is to actually pause, acknowledge you’re exhausted, take a moment, take a few breaths, possibly make yourself a nice cup of herbal tea and aim for nourishing foods that are higher in Vitamin B (leafy greens and legumes), omega-3 (Chia seeds, Brussels sprouts, Walnut) and Vitamin E (Almond, Kiwi, Avocado) more often.
2- You’re stressed:
One of the things we as humans are wired to crave when under stress, is carbohydrates, and sugar acts as double carbs!
As always, the first step is to actually acknowledge that you’re stressed out and give yourself some grace. Taking a few deep breaths is always the next best thing followed by making shifts and changes to reduce your stress levels as best as possible in any given situation.
In moments of stress and the deep desire for sugar, do your best to opt for better choices that won’t send your blood sugar levels to the roof, such as a sweet crunchy apple, or a juicy sweet orange.
3- Your gut is not getting what it needs:
So it reaches out for the next best thing, per say, but not really…
From different deficiencies to an imbalance gut flora, your gut is the driver of the foods you crave.
Knowing that, aim to eat foods that promote a healthy gut environment (fruits and vegetables are on top of my list), prebiotic fibers like gluten free oats, leeks, dandelions, seaweeds and… and notice how your sugar cravings drop.
4- Too many artificial sweeteners in your diet:
They make your brain crave more sugar, plain and simple. And very quickly it becomes this never ending vicious cycle of sugar sugar sugar…
Avoid them at all costs, or as best as you can. One of the best ways to start this process is to get familiar with their names and identify them in the foods and drinks you buy.
If you find yourself battling a serious sugar addiction, take things one day at a time. Before you satisfy cravings, drink a tall glass of water, that may just do it, then If you’re still craving sugar go through the list and notice how you’re feeling and collect more info on why you’re craving it before reaching out for any food and once you do, aim to give yourself the best possible food option that’s available to you.
